Rödl energie and BayWa AG to build LNG service station in bayernhafen Nürnberg
Official groundbreaking ceremony with the Lord Mayor of Nuremberg, Dr. Ulrich Maly – Construction to begin on 24 September – Inauguration scheduled for April 2020
Nuremberg, 25.10.2019 – On Thursday, the long-standing bayernhafen resident, Rödl energie, and BayWa held the groundbreaking ceremony for their new LNG service station in bayernhafen Nürnberg. Lord Mayor Dr. Ulrich Maly, Dr. Michael Fraas, the Spokesman on Economic Affairs, Dr. Peter Pluschke, the Spokesman on Environmental Affairs, Stefan Rödl, the Managing Director of Rödl energie, Dr. Klaus Mohrenweiser of BayWa AG and Alexander Ochs, member of the Management Board of bayernhafen, along with other involved parties, joined them to officially launch the construction phase for the new service station.
Upon completion, the service station in Mülheimer Straße will make Nuremberg one of the first cities in Germany (there are currently only four other locations nationwide) offering the possibility to refuel vehicles with this alternative fuel. “I welcome the decision of Rödl energie and BayWa to open a new chapter for the metropolitan region in the field of alternative fuels,” says Dr Ulrich Maly, the Lord Mayor of the City of Nuremberg. “The new LNG service station will boost efforts to protect the climate, will reduce CO2 emissions in freight transport and will send a clear message to industry and the logistics sector: we want to – and we can – protect the environment.” Dr. Michael Fraas, the Spokesman on Economic Affairs of the City of Nuremberg, adds: “The choice of bayernhafen Nürnberg as the site for the new service station will strengthen the position of the metropolitan region of Nuremberg as an outstanding commercial location for the energy and environmental technology sector in Europe. In addition to hydrogen, LNG is another fuel that will serve the future of mobility.”
Alexander Ochs, member of the Management Board of bayernhafen and Managing Director of the company that operates bayernhafen Nürnberg and Roth, Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH, agrees wholeheartedly with the city representatives. “We see our role as site architects and this is how we act. We not only provide the companies operating from our ports with the space they need to develop new fields of business, but also strengthen the synergy effects between the companies based at our port. The new LNG service station developed by our long-standing resident company, Rödl energie, is a further example of this. There is also a second advantage to the location: Many of the companies based in and around bayernhafen Nürnberg operating LNG-powered vehicles will, in future, be potential customers for Rödl energie and BayWa.”
Rödl energie and BayWa are already in contact with companies interested in refuelling their trucks at the LNG service station. The German government currently provides grants of 12,000 euro to companies who plan to acquire LNG-fuelled trucks. Through their LNG project, the two partners are blazing a trail for the future of environmentally friendly HGV transport.
They are convinced that the energy market will continue to develop and hydrogen technology will in future play a key role in the heavy goods transportation sector. Until such day comes, the two companies want to offer their customers an environmentally friendly alternative now.
